EXPLOSIVE ROCK-DOC "DIG!"
CHRONICLES CLASSIC TALE OF ART VS. COMMERCE & THE DO'S AND DON'TS
OF ROCK STARDOM
2004 Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner Controversial
Story
Continues On 2-DVD Set Coming April 12
"Powerful. Transcends The Rock-doc genre." Rolling Stone
New York, NY (January 13, 2005) Winner of the 2004 Grand Jury Prize
at Sundance, DIG! makes its highly anticipated DVD debut on April
12. DIG! opened theatrically in over thirty cities and garnered
major critical acclaim. The New York Times' A.O. Scott wrote, "Heaven-sent!
If universities ever start graduate programs in rock stardom, "Dig!"
will surely be a cornerstone of the curriculum" and Newsweek
hailed DIG! as "Painfully funny. It's like a spectacular roadside
accident; you can't turn away."
Filmed over seven years (1996-2002) and culled from over 1500 hours
of footage by rising director Ondi Timoner, DIG! plunges into the
underbelly of rock 'n' roll unearthing an amazing true tale of success,
self destruction, friendship, and the ultimate rivalry between two
up-and-coming bands; Brian Jonestown Massacre led by the tormented,
self-destructive genius of Anton Newcombe, and the Dandy Warhols
led by a more polished, but admittedly less visionary Courtney Taylor.
DIG! is the story of their loves and obsessions, gigs and recordings,
arrests and death threats, uppers and downers, and the delicate
balance between art and commerce. As the idealism and destructive
tendencies of Jonestown lead to their repeated undoing, the more
'well-adjusted' Warhols navigate the corporate sea, trying to maintain
their creative edge while starring in mega-budget music videos and
playing huge arenas.
DIG! will debut as a collectible 2-DVD set . The first DVD includes
the film and features a special interactive viewing experience allowing
the viewer to watch deleted scenes in the context of the film. Also
included on the first disc are commentary tracks with both bands
and the filmmakers. The second bonus DVD contains over 60 minutes
of additional unseen material including deleted scenes, "where
are they now?" updates, performance videos, Dandy Warhols videos,
footage from MTV's Subterranean, and much more! In their highly
informative and often comedic commentary tracks, each band reunites
to view DIG! together for the first time
reliving their exploits,
melees, drug abuse, and conflicts, even sometimes finding resolution.
Released by Palm Pictures in association with Interloper Films,
DIG! is part of Palm's ongoing commitment to releasing the best
in music themed documentaries and festival pedigree films. As DIG!
crosses easily between fans of both genres, the 2-DVD package will
be aggressively marketed to music, mass merchant, and lifestyle
outlets, as well as more traditional home video outlets. Consumer
marketing efforts will include TV, radio, and print adverting to
reach the mainstream consumer in addition to more targeted online
viral and offline street marketing. Hailed, "The best film
about musicians and the music industry in years
" by The
Guardian and "A visciously sharp essay on art, commerce, friendship,
and madness
" by The Boston Globe, DIG! will be available
on DVD beginning April 12, 2005 for a suggested retail price of
$24.98.
