Magnum PR uncages The Wildbirds
Debut Full length “Golden Daze” out August 14th on PRC
On tour this June and July with Jesse Malin

‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now…’

Theirs is a story of 4 young musicians who sold their new equipment and opted for the amps, guitars, and drum kits that great bands like Van Morrison, The Band, and Bob Dylan used. Things built to last, built to stand the test of time. A vibrant anomaly amid the glut of over-produced rock records on today’s airwaves, The Wildbirds like spittle on their mics and distortion in their amps. They like their guitars to bite their drums crisp, hair flapping like a free flag. The great hope for those alienated by all things angular and artrock, The Wildbirds strip the sound right back and expertly straddle the gap between old school rock thump and new school cool.

The Wildbirds’ debut album “Golden Daze” (PRC August 14, 2007) is filled to the brim bursting with energetic, exciting, heartfelt red-blooded rock n’ roll. It’s the joyful noise of 21st Century boys putting their own raucous spin on the tuneful template that harks back to some big names in rock n’roll history. It’s good times to get the feet tapping and the noggin nodding, playing air guitar or singing into your hairbrush – like lyricist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Nicholas Stuart did to Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Humble Pie. “There was a turning point in lyric writing for me. I spent my whole youth trying to mimic my favorite musicians. It became plain to me one day that I was afraid of writing exactly how I felt. If I now find myself writing nonsensical bullshit I just put the pen down and walk away. it won't inspire myself nor anyone else. The first song I wrote in this new light was “Suzanna”, (a soulful bluesy ballad) naturally it has a warm place in my heart.”

All wonderfully created with genuine affection, the songs found on The Wildbirds debut crackle with inspirational fervor, and linger long in the memory. From the fire alarm guitar riff that opens “421 (Everybody Loves You)”, through the droning tasty psychedelic licks featured on “It’s Alright Now” and the boogie-riffic stomp of “Someday We Can Fly Away”, The Wildbirds play it straight without the winks and smirks and this debut is all the more daring for it. Willfully remaining oblivious to the latest fads and trends, The Wildbirds debut “Golden Daze” is the sort of timeless record that could have been made in 1972, 1979 or 1991, an album that packs the immediate punch of a slug of bourbon on a Saturday night.

Stuart attributes that to “The writing and recording process: we put really high standards on each other. It wasn’t like, ‘I want you to write the greatest riff or the best song,’ but ‘I want you to feel something when you play that.’ I don’t want to play a lick unless I believe it.” Joined by his other band mates in pursuit of the ever-elusive sound are lead guitarist Matthew Reetz, drummer Jon Jon and original bassist Michael Belliveau (who left the band after the album’s completion, and has since been replaced by Hugh Masterson).

Holed up in a cabin up in the woods of Northern Wisconsin with producer Greg Fidelman catalyst for the likes of Johnny Cash, U2, Neil Diamond and engineer Greg Gordon (Hot Hot Heat, Oasis, JET), the music still retains the loose and convivial vibe of those all-night backwoods jam sessions. “Most of what you hear on the record is just us four in a room, freeform jams style,” says Stuart. “Some of the vocals were recorded live with the band, so occasionally you’ll hear laughter and random talking, false starts and all that stuff.”

Happily devoid of studio trickery and technical fairy dust, leaving songs like “Shake Shake,” “Way Down Low”and “Please Don’t Go” free to crackle like a live power cable. “It’s pretty much just us doing our thing. God
knows, there’s mistakes and imperfections, but that’s the stuff that makes it interesting to us.”
Admirable!

It’s wild like the wind and free as a bird.

So there you have it, The Wildbirds, born out of fire and freedom. They’re hungry veterans looking for their piece of that American apple pie. And who can blame them? They are everything you want a rock and roll band to be.

Already seasoned from a couple of years of playing Midwestern dives The Wildbirds are ready to spread their wings and take their music to the rest of the world. On the road, we will expect The Wildbirds to continue to soar to new heights “ We’ll do it just to keep our minds in the clouds, because that’s where we’re the happiest.”
