The Radio Dept’s widely anticipated album

“Clinging To A Scheme”

out on Labrador/Caroline

April 20, 2010

Second single Free Mp3 Download “Never Follow Suit” to be released May 19th

While “Heaven’s on Fire,” Radio Dept’s first single, was the No. 1 most popular blogged about tune on the Hype Machine for several days, Radio Dept are gearing up for the release of their new single, “Never Follow Suit,” which will also be accompanied by a video, all in anticipation of Radio Dept’s widely anticipated album release Clinging To A Scheme”.

“More deliberate and relaxed than its predecessor, the mighty “Heaven’s on Fire”, “Never Follow Suit” combines a mutant electro beat and keyboard stabs with a delicate, classically Swedish pop vocal…an eclectic mix of styles.” Pitchfork

As for “Heaven’s on Fire,” the first single, here’s what they’re saying:

“The Radio Dept is one of the great unsung Swedish rock bands from the last several years. Their albums Lesser Matters and Pet Grief are both insanely great pieces of soft pop, so if you like Air France, JJ et al, you’ll like this. “Heaven’s on Fire” starts with a rebellious manifesto taken from Thurston Moore, is like the “Young Folks” for these less exuberant days and has a piano melody that sounds like a ’90s rap sample and is driving us crazy. Please help us keep our sanity in the comments section and buy this album when it comes out.” The Fader

“Sunny, exuberant pop, with bouncing keys and joyfully strummed guitars.” Pitchfork

“Best pop song of the year so far? Quite possibly. It’s a free song from the endlessly ace Radio Dept. GET GET GET” NME Radio

“Joyous, heavy and delivered with beautiful ease.” Artrocker

As for the album, the long wait is finally over! The Radio Dept’s Clinging to a Scheme is without a doubt this year’s most eagerly anticipated Swedish indie pop album. It’s been four long years, but a simple press on Play and you’ll know it’s been worth every song. Clinging to a Scheme combines the best components from their previous albums, ‘Lesser Matters’ and ‘Pet Grief’, with soul guitars, P-funk, cut/paste beats and ’70s futuristic orchestra. Breathtaking!

And this sums up the album best:

“The album builds on the signature Labrador Records stamp of high quality swirls of vocals and C86 orchestration over the lush backdrop of keyboards, beats and sassy tambourine. Songs like “This Time Around” and “Never Follow Suite” will bring back memories of Saint Etienne, Pet Shop Boys and your dream of what would have happened if the Stone Roses and My Bloody Valentine would have joined forces. ” Three Imaginary Girls

A little bit of background…

The Radio Department arrived in 2003 with their album Lesser Matters, which is commonly referred to as the most important Swedish indie pop album of the 21st century. It was embraced by press and fans all over the world. They had no less than two “Singles of the Week” in NME and it ended up, not surprisingly, Top 10 on the NME’s “Album of the Year”-List.

In 2006 Sophia Coppola chose to feature three of their songs in the film Marie Antoinette, which further helped them achieve worldwide recognition. The same year the chart-topping and critically acclaimed album Pet Grief was released. In the end of 2009, Lesser Matters came to be one out of two Swedish albums to appear on NME’s “Greatest Albums of the Decade”-List.

“This album is a miniature classic – here’s hoping indie snobbery doesn’t condemn it to the mists of time (The Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade)” NME

The Radio Department’s releases have been referred to as The perfect mix between Saint Etienne and early Jesus and Mary Chain and the best songs Pet Shop Boys never wrote and the album you’d hoped My Bloody Valentine did after Loveless. And perhaps all the comparisons make sense. In a way. But the truth is that Sweden’s No. 1 alternative pop geniuses only sound like one band – themselves.

‘This album is so nice, we reviewed it twice. Clinging to a Scheme is a wonderful all-rounder of damn good quality song writing.” CMU

“The Radio Dept, a band who just don’t make bad records.” Lazy Brighton

“Clinging to a Scheme” shows the range of a pop band that found its expression already on their debut album and now devotes their future to be a bit less finished, and a little more perfect, for each album. “ Sonic, Sweden’s most important music magazine

“Clinging to a Scheme is somewhat of a masterpiece.” Plaza

“Where Did All My People Go”

Double Wax package Released October 27 on Long Nights, Impossible Odds
Distribution by Burnside & Ioda
Digital release date: October 27th, 2009
In stores: November 3rd, 2009

For 10.5 months of the year there is little else to do in Chicago besides drink heavily. The Prairie Cartel started as an excuse for Scott Lucas (Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison (both ex-Caviar) to do this in Mike’s basement while playing their favorite records. Albums on DFA, Matador, Wax Trax, Modular and Creation were all in heavy rotation during those dark months except when the whisky came out and it went all Ummagumma on them. The obligatory, possibly illegal, and definitely messy DJ gigs followed. Warehouses and lofts trembled before their can’t-mix, won’t-even-try-to-mix majesty. They developed a reputation for sets that were somehow gloriously disheveled but still extremely satisfying. After a particularly delirious night behind, on top of, and in front of the decks in London where some teeth got chipped, a little blood got spilled, and the local authorities threatened to pull their passports, they decided the timing was perfect to pick their instruments back up and go home to cut a record.

They bought a couple of used microphones, a bi-polar Mac, and locked themselves back in Mike’s basement. For a long time. maybe longer than what is considered healthy by normal people. Empty bottles and pizza boxes piled up. Beards grew, got cut, and grew again. Creatures with tails scurried in shadowy corners. Friends and family became worried. But then 2 EPs suddenly emerged in quick succession to unanimously positive reviews and doors began to open for them. They got asked to put a song in the Grand Theft Auto video game. Then they got asked to create an entire channel for the hand-held version, achieving every artist’s dream of cornering the market in sound tracking virtual third-person deals of digital drugs.

So, with all things taking its course, rather than emerging to tour and possibly killing this creative streak, they decided to ride it out in their tiny room until somebody cracked. The exhilarating result of this is Where Did all my People Go

From the warped raw warehouse party-provoking opener “Keep Everybody Warm” ”The Prairie Cartel start off their debut by giving everybody a shout out, “And what you gotta do, is keep yourself together. Keep everybody warm.” Emerging from the Chicago Urban underground TPC blur the line with their delectably industrial yet funky directions.

Sequenced in a continuous mix, the second tune in, “Suitcase Pimp” keeps the dirty rock alive with it’s seedy sleazy guitar line and gutter-nonsense lyrics: “Can I kick it can I lick, if I lick it if I lick will you like it?”

Recently award-winning Chinese director Peng Lei (an accomplished filmmaker/animator whose clay animation film “Beihai Monster” from 2006 was a hit in Chinese indie-film world and has won numerous awards) discovered The Prairie Cartel and is currently completing his psychedelic urban-yeti dance video for the track “No Light Escapes Here”.

As Peng explained to the lads, “The reason I wanted to direct this video was that I’m impressed with the lyrics to this song, and understand that the lyrics are about trying to express yourself artistically in an oppressive communist regime.” Musically he also felt connected, Peng Lei is a member of New Pants, one of the most revered bands in China’s contemporary music history who formed in 1996 and their early sound was influenced heavily by new wave and early punk rock, particularly the Ramones. And in true punk rock fashion, Peng takes a huge risk by using Mao all over the video. We will be world premiering this video soon.

From the Giorgio Moroder meets Modern Lovers groove of “Cracktown” to the WTF Ian Curtis frenetic freak out of “Fuck Yeah That Wide,” Where Have All My People Gone captures the anarchy and spirit of a mid-western band giddy to warp their electronics with the necks of their guitars. And they’ll wet your sonic palate even further with their hypnotically catchy chorus in “Lost All Track of Time”. You’ll even find a bit of Ambient layered with texture and chaos on “Magnetic South”. So Enjoy what the Prairie Cartel sound like now, the band just discovered Pink Floyd and that’s just the icing.

Where Have All My People Gone is a slurry blast through Disco, Indie, Punk Rock and Electro, (depending on what they were ingesting at the time) and plays like an unruly house party that is more about sloppy kissing and jumping up and down and less about that one dude nobody invited getting into fights.

Where Did All My People Go is set for release on November 3rd on Long Nights, Impossible Odds
TRACK LISTING:

KEEP EVERYBODY WARM
SUITCASE PIMP
LOST ALL TRACK OF TIME
CRACKTOWN
BEAUTIFUL SHADOW
HOMICIDE
NARCOTIC INSIDIOUS
Released 19th October 2009 on Invada Records

Coming out on Ipecac in the US this November

BEAK> were formed in January 2009 by three Bristol musicians, Billy Fuller, Matt Williams and Geoff Barrow.

The band have very strict guidelines governing the recording and writing process of their work. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in SOA Studio’s, Bristol. The album is to be released on Invada Records UK and Europe.

Sometimes a band can be no more than the sum of it’s parts, but BEAK> are an equation in which it’s impossible to define equivalents or totals. Instead the meeting of three talent’s form a foundation from which idea’s assimilate and propagate. Those talents are:

Billy Fuller. Reared in Bristol, on an aural diet of anything and everything, facilitated later by his time working in the cities top independent record shop Replay Records, and also playing with handfuls of bands – including Invada’s first signing: Fuzz Against Funk, as well as Massive Attack, Robert Plant, and Malakai. Billy is BEAK>’S thoughtful pulse; his bass a forceful origin for their superlative narrative arcs.

Matt Williams. Picked up a Yamaha keyboard aged three and never looked back, as Team Brick creates dissonance that immediately elucidates free forming thought, and impacts heavily on BEAK>’S rolling landscape. He enjoys playing air drums whilst cycling, singing lines from a favourite Latin prayer and doesn’t understand the music he makes himself.

Geoff Barrow. Musician and producer born near Bristol. Best known for forming and producing popular music group Portishead and part owner of the independent record label Invada Records. Commenting on working in BEAK> “its really good to create music under different conditions than you’re used too.”

A limited edition box set version of the album will be available from September direct from the Invada website. Inside a specially designed black Beak> box will be a CD version of the album, a limited edition CD EP, 12” vinyl with 2 bonus tracks and a T Shirt.

Wax Tailor Announces Third Album “In The Mood For Life” and US Tour

Wax Tailor’s first album “Tales of the Forgotten Melodies” drew comparisons to the likes of RJD2, Portishead and DJ Shadow, while his second “Hope & Sorrow” (80,000 sold worldwide) landed him a nomination at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique, as well as the US Indie Awards. France’s Wax Tailor is currently coming off a year which saw him tour relentlessly (over 200 concerts) and score the title track for the movie “Paris” by Cedric Klapisch.

Fueled by the energy of relentless touring he has written his third and best album to date “In the Mood for Life”. Written in both Paris and New York City, this necromancer of forgotten melodies is able to blend Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop, and 60’s Pop Music into a 52 minute journey. You can join in on his journey when he comes to the US for 12 live dates around the country this October (dates below).

IN THE MOOD FOR LIFE
Out on Le Plan Music
Digital Release Date: September 22, 2009
Physical Release Date: October 27,2009

Wax Tailor masters the art of reinventing oneself, and although his signature sound is immediately identifiable, a style oft compared to melancholic melodies reminiscent of The Cocteau Twins blended with a delicate balance of Hip-Hop seldom seen these days, this new album establishes a true evolution both in terms of production and song writing. String instruments, which were once just extras, now assume a more prominent role (”Dry Your Eyes”,” Go Without Me”), and where genres once crossed path from one track to another, they now collide within a track (”This Train”, “Fireflies”). The resulting sound is denser, more organic and the song writing more finely chiseled.

With the opening notes, the mood sets the stage. Wax Tailor is now the conductor of melodies, the director of an aural movie whose urban roots meet the perfect casting. Throughout this album, he appropriates a multitude of references with a very personal touch. His music is beyond genres and defies categorization, it is a modern brand of pop music, designed with a rigor and an expertise that betrays the love this artist puts into his craft.

The Mary Onettes – US Tour Cancelled

We are very sorry to announce that we are forced to cancel our US tourdue to the volcanic ash that is keeping European air traffic grounded.

We feel really sad for all our fans who had already bought tickets and for the promotors and support bands who have been advertising and working for the shows.

We would like to thank Ben at Paquin Entertainment and Sioux at Magnum Pr, who have done a truly amazing job.

We hope to return for a new tour later on.

Please contact the box office where you bought your tickets for refunds.

Love, The Mary Onettes
